 DESCRIPTION

Pre-K campers enjoy the summer mornings in the fresh air of the Watchung Reservation and the afternoons at the Summit YMCA.  Days are spent playing games, making arts & crafts, being in the pool and exploring nature.  Special activities and theme days add to the fun!

CAMP STRUCTURE

YMCA Pre-School camps help children to develop to their fullest potential by allowing them to learn through discovery and play.  Our camps offer developmentally appropriate activities that help children develop physically, emotionally, intellectually and socially.  Activities are designed to reinforce and encourage the YMCA values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.

Discovery Camp will spend their mornings at the Watchung Reservation and their afternoons at the Summit YMCA.  Each day children must be dropped off in the 2nd floor classrooms at 8:30 am.  Children will then be transported to the Watchung Reservation by bus to the Loop Area where our older age (Camp Cannundus) camp is located.  Children will be bused to the reservation at 9:00 am to start their day and return to the Y in the early afternoon.  Parents needing to drop off after 9:00 am or pick up earlier than our return will need to do so at the Reservation.  At the reservation children will experience the outdoor camping atmosphere.  Through participation in camp activities such as swimming, crafts, hikes, song, nature/science activities and creative, active play, your child will learn to develop both physical growth and cooperative skills.  The camper to counselor ratio will be approximately 8:1.

If your child will be absent from camp, please call the Camp Absentee Phone Line at (908) 273-3330 ext 165.  Please state you child’s name, camp program, your name and a number where you can be reached for any questions.  Please note; calls should be made to the absentee line each day your child is absent.

MEDICAL FORMS / MEDICATIONS

State Law requires that all campers have a current Medical Form on file before attending camp.  The YMCA must receive the completed form with your first payment.  The form does not need to be completed by a doctor.  Camper safety is a main priority and all of our staff is trained in emergency procedures.  If your child will be taking medications during camp, please contact the Camp Director at 908-273-3330 for a Medication Release Form.  This form and the medication must be given to the Pre-School Camp Director on the first day your child attends camp.  If an accident occurs which requires treatment beyond our first aid, the staff person in charge will arrange for the camper to be taken to Overlook Hospital.  You will be notified of the situation and your permission for treatment will be necessary.

STAFF

The YMCA takes pride in our quality staff!  All directors and counselors are chosen based on their enthusiastic personalities, leadership abilities, and appreciation of children.  All of our staff are trained in emergency procedures. Camper safety is our main priority.

Our staff is dedicated to making your child’s summer fun and enjoyable.  We strive to have each camp leave the day with a smile on his/her face.  It is our hope that you will let us know if anything prevents this.

 DISCIPLINE PROCEDURES

In order for camp to operate smoothly, we must set reasonable limitations.  Limits are necessary to maintain safety, protect health and regard the right of others.  Constructive methods of discipline will be used to promote the child’s self discipline and good behavior.  Serious behaviors that affect other children, counselors or supervisors, such as, but not limited to, swearing, fighting, leaving the group and refusal to obey the staff will be handled in the following manner:

First Warning:           Written notice of infraction requiring Parent/Guardian signature.

Second Warning:       Parent/Staff/Camper conference and possible temporary suspension.

Third Warning:          Child will be dismissed from camp; fees are non-refundable.

Any other discipline problems as determined by the staff may also be reasons for
warnings or termination. In very serious cases, suspension may be the first step.
